    Finance Director
    NYC | Full-Time | Hybrid (Friday WFH)
    Salary Range: $100,000 - $120,000 (commensurate with experience); generous benefits package

    About Us
    The Order of Malta is a Catholic lay religious order founded in the 11th century, dedicated to its motto "Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum" - nurturing and protecting the faith while serving the poor and the sick. Today, 13,500 Knights and Dames carry out humanitarian and spiritual works in 120 countries. The American Association, established in 1927 and headquartered in New York City, includes approximately 1,800 members across 30 Areas primarily along the East Coast and Midwest who serve through initiatives such as Malta Mobile Ministry, Malta Camp USA, soup kitchens, prison ministry, senior care, health and pregnancy center support, migrant assistance, and an annual pilgrimage to Lourdes as well as other pilgrimages and retreats. Rooted in the Catholic faith, the Association's mission-driven work is Christ-centered, impactful, hands-on, and sustainable, combining service to the sick and marginalized with opportunities for spiritual growth and enrichment.

    Position Summary
    We are seeking an experienced Finance Director to oversee the organization's accounting operations and financial reporting functions.
    This is a highly visible leadership role that partners closely with executive leadership and the Board. The position exercises independent judgment, ensures strong internal controls, and supports the organization's long-term financial health.

    The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and experienced in nonprofit financial management.
    Experience with Sage Intacct is required.

    Key Responsibilities

    Accounting & Financial Operations
    • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and general ledger management
    • Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
    • Review and approve payroll processing and reconciliations
    • Perform and review cash and balance sheet reconciliations
    • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure GAAP compliance
    • Perform/Manage accounts payable and receivable processes

    Audit & Compliance
    • Lead annual audit preparation and serve as primary liaison to external auditors
    • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation
    • Ensure compliance with nonprofit reporting requirements
    • Complete state filings
    • Support grant compliance tracking and reporting

    Financial Reporting & Analysis
    • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports
    • Develop and monitor annual budgets
    • Prepare budget-to-actual analyses and financial forecasts
    • Identify trends and provide recommendations to leadership
    • Present financial reports to executive leadership and Board members

    Payroll/HR
    • Manage bi-weekly payroll and benefits administration

    Strategic & Leadership Support
    • Provide financial insight to department leaders
    • Support long-term financial planning initiatives
    • Escalate significant financial risks or concerns appropriately
    • Partner with leadership to improve financial systems and efficiencies

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (CPA preferred but not required)
    • 5+ years of progressive accounting/financial management experience
    • Strong nonprofit accounting experience required
    • Experience managing audits and financial reporting for nonprofit entities
    • Advanced proficiency in Sage Intacct required
    • Strong working knowledge of Excel
    • Experience with Bill.com, ADP/Paychex, or similar platforms preferred
    • Experience with CRM/Donor database (i.e., DonorPerfect) preferred
