Job Summary:
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) assists the Daughters of St. Paul in promoting the Gospel message through supporting the nursing staff in the care of the sisters who are residents of the Daughters of St. Paul Residential Care Home. The CNA provides basic care under the direction of the Shift Lead Nurse (RN or LPN) to meet the physical needs of the sisters. Because of the personal nature of the job, a CNA must exhibit people skills and the ability to be compassionate and enjoy helping others.
Job Responsibilities
1. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of sisters' health and emotional needs.
2. Performs assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures and as instructed by the Supervisor.
3. Adheres to and conveys a philosophy that supports the dignity, privacy, independence, choice, and individuality of the sisters.
4. Participates in and receives the nursing report as necessary. Identifies sisters prior to administering care.
5. Utilizes the sister's care plan to obtain information regarding her current care needs.
6. Provides care under the direction of the Shift Lead Nurse to meet the physical needs of the sisters. Maintains the dignity of the sisters at all times.
7. Lifts sisters into beds, wheelchairs, exam tables, etc.
8. Provides assistance, as needed, to maintain the sisters' hygiene and comfort. Reports any skin alteration, open areas, redness, etc. to Shift Lead Nurse.
9. Takes vital signs and checks blood sugar under the direction of the Shift Lead Nurse.
10. Responds appropriately in emergency situations. Notifies Shift Lead Nurse immediately of any incident.
11. Understands fire and disaster procedures and is able to respond appropriately.
12. Maintains confidentiality of medical information of the sisters.
13. Assists sisters in using bathrooms and commodes when appropriate. Provides and empties bedpans when needed.
14. Provides personal care including bathing, mouth care, denture care, skin care, foot care, hair cuts, and dressing the sisters. Ensures that the sisters' clothing is neat, clean and ironed.
15. Turns or repositions sisters who are bedridden every two hours and as needed.
16. Assists in preparing food trays and in feeding the sisters if needed.
17. Ambulates the sisters as indicated.
18. Accompanies sisters to activities and participates when appropriate.
19. Assists with various medical procedures and first aid as trained and directed by Shift Lead Nurse.
20. Accurately reports and documents the sisters' care, noting the sister's condition, significant changes, unusual occurrences or incidents.
21. Examines sisters for bruises, blood in urine or other injuries/wounds.
22. Practices safety awareness when providing care and reports unsafe conditions to the Shift Lead Nurse (i.e., wet floors, appropriate lighting, safety hazards).
23. Assists in maintaining equipment and ensures that equipment is operable; cleans and disinfects all equipment before and after use.
24. Assists in maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment; cleans and sanitizes patient areas.
25. Changes bed sheets and stocks rooms with necessary supplies.
26. Assists with the washing and ironing of the personal laundry of the sisters, sheets and towels.
27. Attends staff meetings, continuing education, and in-services.
28. Observes and follows policies in the Personnel Handbook.
29. Performs any other task as requested by the Shift Lead Nurse for the proper functioning of the Daughters of St. Paul Residential Care Home and proper care of the sisters.
Qualifications and Requirements
Certification as a Certified Nurse Assistant.
Ability to relate and work effectively with the elderly, ill, disabled.
Respect and understanding for the style and commitment of life of the sisters in her care.
Ability to recognize the needs and desires of others and to be respectful and courteous to others.
Ability to accept and follow direction from the licensed nurse.
Ability to accept and cooperate with changes in the work place.

Special Duties:
If additionally certified, perform blood draws on sisters when lab tests are ordered by MD.
Provide additional care if properly certified.
