Ecclesiastical Judge
The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has an opportunity for an experienced Canonist to join the Metropolitan Tribunal team.
The Ecclesiastical Judge (Canonist) reviews and judges matrimonial cases within the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The focus of this ministry is to support marriage as the Church teaches and assist couples in rectifying and validating a current or past marriage, making way for an individual's full celebration of the faith.
The ideal candidate will have current knowledge if theology, Canon Law, and Liturgical Law, as well as pastoral practices in these areas.
Responsibilities
•Assist the Matrimonial tribunal by reviewing cases and determining necessary/appropriate action.
•Judge marriages in the First and Second Instances and write judicial sentences.
•Conduct interviews of petitioners, respondents, and witnesses, using one's own Spanish language abilities or by using a translator.
•Assist in the Due Process Office/Court of Equity by meeting with parties in cases and directing the Coordinator on follow-up actions.
•Work occasionally as an advocate and orally advocate cases as requested.
•Provide oral and written canonical opinions as requested by the Archbishop or other offices, parishes, or general population.
•Undertake necessary research to shape opinions on various canonical matters.
Qualifications
•J.C.L. degree required.
•Three to five years previous experience in canon law in a Tribunal setting preferred.
•Must be a practicing Catholic.
•Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with Canon Law, Liturgical Law, and theology.
•Knowledge of current policies and practices in effect in the Archdiocese.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Ability to work well with Tribunal staff and others.
•Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint, Word.
•Strong commitment to confidentiality.
•Bilingual Spanish-speaking preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
The position is a full-time, salaried position working in-person at the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Pastoral Center. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee provides a full-scope of employment benefits, including health and wellness, flex-time, Catholic school tuition assistance for children of employees, and a pension program. Occasional weekend and evening assignments and occasional travel throughout the archdiocese are required.
