Relationship to Parish Administrative Organization: Reports to the pastor.
Principal Responsibilities: Prepares and directs instrumental or vocal music for liturgical services.
Principal Activities: 1. Directs groups at rehearsals and liturgical services to achieve desired effects such as tonal and harmonic balance dynamics, rhythm, and tempo. 2. Plans and schedules rehearsals and performances, and arranges details such as locations, accompanists, and instrumentalists. 3. Considers such factors as ensemble size and abilities, availability of scores, and the need for musical variety, to select music for liturgical services. 4. Studies scores to learn the music in detail, and to develop interpretations. 5. Positions members within groups to obtain balance among instrumental or vocal sections. 6. Confers with clergy to select music for liturgical services. 7. Auditions and selects cantors to lead music for liturgical services. 8. Meets with accompanists and cantors to discuss and prepare for liturgical services. 9. Acquires and maintains all equipment and musical instruments for the parish. 10. Oversees the parish music library. 11. Provides or coordinates accompaniment for liturgical services. 12. Recruits accompanists and cantors to lead liturgical services. 13. Recruits choir members. 14. Performs other duties as directed the pastor or parochial administrator.
Qualifications 1. A bachelor's degree in music education or performance. 2. Knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical practices. 3. Ability to play the piano and/or organ proficiently 4. Ability to mentor and encourage musicians and singers in a parish environment.
