The Office of Youth, Campus, and Young Adult Ministries (OYCYAM) assists parishes and college campuses in the Catholic Diocese of Arlington to fully incorporate young people into the life of the Church. This is accomplished through advocacy for youth workers on the diocesan level, training and development of youth workers, large diocesan gatherings of young people, and providing collaboration and communication between all schools, parishes, and organizations.
The Program Specialist assists with all aspects of developing and sustaining programs and outreach to young people of all ages within the OYCYAM. This position will have added emphasis towards young people from 19 to 35 years old, with a mission of drawing them closer to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. The Program Specialist will work with the Executive Director to devise and communicate a strategy to achieve the OYCYAM mission. This position will support leaders and create resources for every type of young adult represented within the Diocese - all cultures, single, married, young parents, etc.
Assist the Executive Director with the design and support of programs, training, and other events that encourage young people to become more fully involved in the life of their parish. Ongoing programs include but are not limited to: Theology on Tap (or similar outreach evenings for young adults), retreats, days of reflection, discipleship formation, Catholic Sports Club activities, FEST, Exalts, and volunteer opportunities. Duties surrounding each of these events include but are not limited to:
Securing speakers, musicians and venues etc.
Developing pertinent themes and advertising materials
On occasion, acting as Master of Ceremonies
Help to expand the visibility and outreach of OYCYAM programs and parish programs by:
using social media, email, phone and face to face meetings
monitoring the diocesan web site to ensure that data is current, attractive, and user-friendly
taking photographs and video at all events to be used in future advertising
working with administrative staff to distribute newsletters to young adult leaders about current parish, regional and diocesan events
updating the Executive Director on the statistical trends of the young adults
assisting with the development of resources for successful diocesan events
answering telephone and email inquiries about young adult events and programs sponsored by the Diocese
working with local colleges and Campus Ministries to facilitate student transition from college to young adult programs and parish life
developing relationships with all parish youth and young adult ministry leaders across the Diocese
Oversee the Catholic Sports Club by maintaining ongoing events, supporting captains, securing locations and equipment, and advertising.
Maintain and establish relationships with young adult parish leaders through various methods of communication, including social media, email, phone and personal meetings. Must maintain updated list of all young adult contacts.
Work with and support young adult volunteers at programs/events sponsored by the OYCYAM such as WorkCamp, RALLY, LIVG, and BASH, to promote parish engagement.
Must have a passion for working with young adults.
Must have an understanding of young adult ministry principles and practices.
Must have an understanding of Catholic Church doctrine.
Strong event planning and program management skills required.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines required.
Must have good communication and teaching skills, along with the ability to communicate to a diverse audience.
Must be able to work with volunteers with diverse personalities and work styles.
Must be able to work and act independently as well as within a team.
Must have strong computer skills with the ability to manage databases, modify websites, and publish brochures.
Proficiency in digital and social media required.
Education Required: BS or BA required in a relevant degree or equivalent experience. MA in a relevant degree is preferred.
Years and Types of Experience: Three to five years event planning or related experience required. Experience working in young adult ministry required. Must have experience working in culturally diverse environments and facilitating cross-cultural communication and relationships.
