The mission of Cathedral High School is to build an integrated Catholic culture upon the four pillars of Sacred Worship, Sacred Wisdom, Sacred Music, and Sacred Art.
The vision of Cathedral High School is to form students to know Christ, pursue truth, and lead a virtuous life. This vision unfolds within the evangelizing mission of the Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter and the holistic philosophy and spirituality of Saint John Henry Newman, who guides this educational endeavor by his motto, Cor ad Cor Loquitur.
Our Patron: Saint John Henry Newman
As the patron saint of Cathedral High School, St. John Henry Newman's spirituality, philosophy, and life journey illuminate and form the culture of the school. From the House System to the names of the classrooms and halls - St. John Henry Newman's legacy and inspiration guides the school community toward fulfilling its mission and vision.
Philosophy of Education
Cathedral High School exists to form students within an authentic Catholic culture by means of truth, beauty, and goodness. It is by forming the hearts of students through Sacred Worship, Sacred Wisdom, Sacred Music, and Sacred Art that a Catholic culture will flourish and thrive at Cathedral High School. Pride of place is given, therefore, to curriculum, pedagogy, and community activities that promote this culture by way of building up the faith, exercising reason, and baptizing the imaginations of our students. This emphasis will ultimately form students toward a deeper participation in the highest form of culture: the liturgy of the Church. Students will receive the opportunity to encounter the Heart of God, and thus know His voice through the liturgy, in the classroom, in their house system, and on the athletic field, in order to develop their own hearts' ability to speak, and to spread the Gospel and true Catholic culture for the rest of their lives.
Sacred Wisdom forms the unifying theme for all courses across all grade levels at Cathedral High School. As a Catholic school in the classical and liberal arts tradition, it is vital that students learn the inner harmony of all knowledge. While it is important to know the core principles of each unique discipline (history, literature, mathematics, science, and languages), it is equally important for students to be formed in the study of sound philosophy, logic, sacred art and sacred music in order to sharpen their minds to receive the queen of the sciences in their theology classes.
Learning is a contemplative search for the interrelatedness of all things in God, thus becoming a path of delight and joy and preparing students to discern and embrace their God-given vocation. Students will be challenged daily to seek the truth by critically reading primary texts and developing the skills for fruitful dialogues and discussion with their teachers and peers. Depth of knowledge is emphasized while meeting the necessary competencies required for flourishing in post-secondary education and beyond.
Thus, the principle undergirding the curriculum and all choices of texts or programs is summed up and articulated best by St. John Henry Newman:
"a truly great intellect possesses the knowledge, not only of things, but also of their mutual and true relations. That only is true enlargement of mind which is the power of viewing many things at once as one whole, of referring them severally to their true place in the universal system, of understanding their respective values, and determining their mutual dependence." (Idea, 116-7, 120-1)
The continuing spiritual, intellectual, and human formation of all faculty and staff members is an essential priority for Cathedral High School. Teachers are critical in forming the culture of a school and accompanying students in their search for the Truth and growth in virtue, thus Cathedral High School is committed to the intentional and ongoing formation of mission-centered faculty and staff members. At Cathedral High School, students will be immersed in the life of the Church with the daily presence of clergy and lay faithful.
Four Pillars at Cathedral High School
SACRED WORSHIP SACRED WISDOM SACRED MUSIC SACRED ART
Primacy is given to the daily celebration of Mass as an essential feature of the school day for the entire community. Since the first education of the soul is conducted by the Word of God and sacramental grace, intentional liturgical formation is the heart of the school life. Thus students will know daily their vital place as members of the universal Church through prayer and worship. The entire academic program of core classes - mathematics, science, integrated humanities, languages, theology, and philosophy - is based on the sacred gift of wisdom, which considers all things in relation to the Creator. Thus the academic approach is rooted in the liberal arts and classical tradition while also including physical development and athletics. Sacred Music is an integral part of the Christian life and singing is a central expression of faith and culture. As a privileged means of ordering the mind and emotions, Sacred Music is critical to forming each student in the language of the Church through developing the student's vocal expression, listening, and understanding of the heart. As a participation in the creative work of God, Sacred Art immerses students in the true, good, and beautiful. By means of this distinctive facet of human formation, and drawing upon the tradition of Sacred Art, the Divine Artist calls students to share His vision for creation and the human person as imago Dei, thus forming students to be co-creators of beauty.
