The Emergency Shelter Kitchen Assistant oversees the daily operations of the kitchen and dining area, including meal planning, food preparation, meal service. Additionally, this position maintains the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and food storage areas. This position may provide supervision to the clients and to ensure their safety and security in a home-like atmosphere. This position is part-time. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Hourly Rate: $14.00
Schedule: Part-time - 20 hours/week | Monday - Friday 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Job Responsibilities:
• Plan menus and ensure meals have fruit and vegetable options
• Ensure proper food safety and sanitation practices, including cleaning and sanitizing countertops, sinks, and appliances, washing dishes and utensils, maintaining cleanliness and proper food handling practices, and ensuring the kitchen and dining area meet health and safety standards
• Monitor inventory levels, order food and supplies, and store food properly to prevent spoilage and waste, while keeping the kitchen and food service areas inspection ready at all times according to Department of Health guidelines
• Manage the kitchen budget, including monitoring expenses, finding cost-saving solutions, and ensuring that food costs are within budget
• Work closely with other departments within the shelter, such as Case Management and Business management, and custodial services to ensure that residents receive the support and resources they need
• Receive and organize food deliveries and keep track of inventory
• Submit invoices and expense reports in an accurate and timely manner
• Complete maintenance requests as needed, electronically, in maintenance software system
• Complete safe food training
• Establish a healthy rapport with clients in order to create a comfortable and safe environment in which clients feel respected, valued, and heard
• Follow all program policies, procedures, and protocols that support the needs of clients and promote the effectiveness of the program
• Other duties as required
Job Requirements:
• Must be able to move objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time and perform physically demanding tasks such as chopping, stirring, and carrying supplies
• Must be flexible and able to work occasional alternate shifts including weekends, weekdays, and holidays
• Must be willing to travel if required
• Must maintain any training and certification requirements
• Must support the teachings of the Catholic Church and embody our organization's mission and culture through behavior and daily interactions
• Regular and predictable on-site attendance is required
• Must be able to assume rotation of on-call responsibilities for program situations
Job Qualifications:
• High school or equivalent required
• 2-5 years of commercial kitchen, preferably in a shelter or housing program
• Knowledge of food safety and sanitation
• Experience with basic kitchen equipment and tools
• Must be able to work well in a team environment
• Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, such as changes in menu or unexpected supply shortages
• Experience with MicroSoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Ability to maintain accurate and timely records and reports
• Strong commitment to advocacy for marginalized populations
