General Description: Manage Overbrook School raised garden beds and animals. The purpose of our Beyond the Brook Farm and outdoor learning is to engage the students with nature, teach stewardship of creation, and engage in active science. The management of the farm and animals supports these goals by working in coordination with the STEM Teacher. The Beyond the Brook Farm has garden beds for each grade level, chickens, rabbits, two sheep and a farm cat. New barn, outdoor learning pavilion, and garden beds in the process of construction to upgrade and renovate current barn and garden area. This position includes hands-on, physical labor maintaining the garden beds and animals as well as management of their care.
Overbrook School, founded in 1936 by the Dominican Sisters of the St. Cecilia Congregation, is a co-educational, preschool- 6th grade Catholic independent school with a dynamic tradition of educating children in a community setting through study, prayer and service. Our vibrant and strong school community is a testament to the commitment of all our members, faculty and staff, parents and friends. The school is located on the Dominican Campus of 83 acres at 4210 Harding Pike, Nashville, TN.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Care and management of the school garden and animals
• Involve and work with parent and community partners in developing and sustaining the Beyond the Brook School Farm
• Encourages and helps students learn the responsibilities of caring for the school garden and animals.
• Collaborates with others to advise and help student projects involving the garden and animals, i.e. recycling, composting
• Organizes and oversees volunteers of the farm
• Work with administration and STEM Teacher to apply for appropriate grant programs and local partnerships
Qualifications:
• Experience in sustainable farming, educational, or comparable setting including basic animal husbandry
• Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the principles of soil biology and management, conservation, permaculture, growing perennials, using cover crops, composting, and a general ecological systems approach to agriculture
• Familiarity with general landscaping and plant care (knowledge of habitat restoration, organic practices, and natural landscaping and stewardship is particularly valued)
• Excellent problem-solving, creative and critical thinking skills
• Excellent communication and organizational skills to work with/coordinate volunteers and students
• Works well with others, comfortable working as a member of a team
• A valid driver's license and safe driving record
• Ability to work outdoors doing hands-on garden work and animal care.
