    Job Description
    Job Summary:
    The Catholic Conference of Ohio, the official representative of the Catholic Church in matters of public policy and government relations, is seeking an Associate Director of Education to lead and advocate for the Conference's activities related to educational issues, particularly those affecting Catholic school communities.

    The primary responsibility of the Associate Director of Education is to monitor, evaluate, and propose responses to legislative and public policy issues and interpret educational laws, rules, and policy proposals for their impact on Catholic schools, students, families, and educators. The person in this position also convenes regular meetings for diocesan superintendents of schools and gathers other program directors or diocesan staff, as needed. The Associate Director of Education reports to the Executive Director of the Conference.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Serves as a registered lobbyist and represents the Catholic school community before the
    General Assembly, State Board of Education, State Department of Education, and other agencies of state government, and on state educational committees, in close coordination with the executive director
    • Monitors policy, budgetary provisions, and administrative rules at the state and federal levels that impact Catholic schools; prepares advocacy activities and develops materials that resource, educate, and motivate legislators, parents, educators, and the Catholic community on behalf of students attending Catholic schools
    • Convenes regular meetings of diocesan superintendents, government programs directors, and meetings of other diocesan staff on an as-needed basis
    • Responds to questions and concerns from superintendents and researches public policy issues
    • In collaboration with diocesan superintendents, presents legislative updates and educates diocesan staff, school principals, and the Catholic community regarding new and pending legislation
    • Networks, as appropriate, with the following groups:
    o United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
    o National Catholic Education Association
    o Other faith-based educational groups and organizations of nonpublic schools that promote the same issues as the Conference
    o Other state Catholic Conferences
    o Public school organizations as advantageous to issues advocated by the CCO
    • In consultation with the executive director, responds to the media regarding educational issues
    • Submits department matters requiring a policy decision to the executive director for referral to the Board of Directors
    • Submits departmental matters requiring legal analysis to the executive director for referral to the CCO's legal counsel
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the executive director
    • Willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed

    Qualifications and Skills:
    • A practicing Catholic in good standing with solid knowledge and passion for the Catholic Church, including structure and doctrine
    • Understanding of Catholic schools, including their distinctive mission, operation, governance, and programs
    • Ability to function as a registered lobbyist in the State of Ohio and to advocate on behalf of the Church before the General Assembly and agencies of state government
    • Knowledge of state and federal laws, administrative rules, and governmental programs impacting Catholic schools, students, staff, and families, and the ability to interpret them for the Catholic community
    • Ability and willingness to work independently and collaboratively and interact with individuals and groups
    • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
    • Strong skills in oral and written communication
