Description: The AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer and Impact Coordinator will do a variety of rewarding, engaging, and capacity-building activities to alleviate poverty in western North Carolina working out of the Western Region Office in Asheville. The VISTA will develop and implement efficient procedures for the agency's food pantry, including volunteer communication and coordination and the maximization of our facilities. The VISTA will recruit, train, and evaluate volunteers for the agency's food pantry program. The VISTA will research and organize local resources and partner agencies to ensure proper staff referrals to service recipients. The VISTA will build outreach capacity to help attract more volunteers and donors to the organization to increase sustainability. The VISTA will enhance the agency's bilingual counseling, refugee resettlement, case management, and burial/cremation assistance programs through the development of systems and organizational capacity-building efforts that will improve each service recipient's experience.
The Western Region Office of Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte in Asheville, North Carolina serves the most vulnerable people in the 12 westernmost counties of North Carolina through the agency's programs, which include a food pantry, case management coordination, Transition Out of Poverty, bilingual clinical mental health counseling, refugee resettlement, and burial/cremation assistance. Nationally, it is estimated that 12.7% of residents live below the poverty line and in North Carolina, an estimated 16.4% of residents and 23.5% of children live without adequate means. The VISTA will improve the agency's ability to help people who are struggling with food insecurity. According to our agency partner, MANNA FoodBank, one in four children don't have access to three square meals a day in western North Carolina and more than 100,000 people every year in western North Carolina face an empty plate. In 2020, the food pantry at the Western Region Office of Catholic Charities served 6,872 people. Last year, the Western Region Office also helped 14 people with burial/cremation assistance, 47 people with clothing, 132 people with financial assistance, 114 people with school supplies, and 325 people with holiday outreach. The agency's goal is to break the cycle of poverty through enhanced service provision by our staff, interns, and volunteers who do direct services to people in need. The VISTA Volunteer and Impact Coordinator will supplement their efforts to build capacity and sustainability in the Western Region Office and alleviate poverty through the development of systems, processes, coordination, and resources that will enhance the agency's ability
to serve people in need.
