The Benefits Specialist is responsible for supporting the Benefits Director in administering the various benefit programs offered to the 3,500+ current benefit eligible employees of the 400+ participating locations that participate in the Archdiocese of Boston Benefit Plans. Benefit plans for current employees include medical, prescription, dental, life and long-term disability insurance, and 401(k). The Benefits Specialist also assists in the administration of several voluntary benefit programs for the Pastoral Center and related locations, including FSA, supplemental life, and a vision plan. Finally, this position is also responsible for assisting with the administration of a frozen defined benefit pension plan. The position is primarily on-site at the Pastoral Center in Braintree, although remote work may be needed from time to time.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee Medicare Primary Payer program, including ongoing enrollments and communications with business managers, participants, and vendors. Responsible for payroll and invoice adjustments related to program participation.
Process life event requests, including follow-up on missing or incomplete backup documentation. Review monthly invoices for accuracy and coordinate with enrollment vendor on any issues.
Process applications for Continuation of Coverage (COC), enter new records into enrollment system, and handle all tasks relating to payment. Send communications confirming enrollment and notifying of termination of coverage and/or non-payment.
Manage data-intensive projects for recurring tasks (such as annual notice mailings), communication initiatives, Pension Plan periodic lump sum offerings, and new benefit plan implementations, using Excel, multiple databases, and other information sources.
Respond to inbound calls and emails from employees and location administrators regarding medical and dental coverage issues and coordinate with vendors as necessary.
Process retiree deaths and requests to begin pension payments, answer pension questions, and assist with pension-related filing.
Review daily payroll/enrollment system reports, handle any manual data entry and necessary notice mailings, and communicate with locations on questions regarding data discrepancies/questions.
Assist with employee and administrator access to payroll and benefit enrollment systems.
Assist with the annual open enrollment process for medical and dental plans.
Serve as primary liaison with outside audit firm for all benefit plans.
Assist in administration of supplemental benefits for Pastoral Center and other relevant locations, including enrollment changes and annual open enrollment.
Assist with ongoing data audits/scrubs and tactical changes in process or communications as needed.
Assist with filing as needed.

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field. PHR or SPHR a plus.
Strong analytical and organizational skills.
Strong Microsoft skills, particularly in Excel and Word.
Experience with online payroll and benefit enrollment systems a plus.
2+ years of benefit plan administration and HCM experience, or equivalent experience in a multi-faceted role.
HIPAA compliance training preferred.
Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment, sometimes with shifting priorities and multiple deadlines.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to prioritize, work efficiently, and transition from task to task while maintaining focus.
High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to troubleshoot issues.
Experience in handling and producing confidential information.
Ability to work independently.
Willingness to support the mission of the Catholic Church. The ability to work comfortably with priests and religious sisters is greatly desired.
