Summary:
• The Director of Communications and Mission Promotion provides oversight for the primary publications of the Diocese of Evansville including The Message and other articles and/or periodicals that may be needed or developed in serving the communication needs of the Bishop, his staff, and the diocese as a whole. Additionally, the Director is responsible for managing media and public relations, the development & management of event and mission promotion, and collateral material strategies for the diocese as well as the development and management of digital media strategies and diocesan website design, content management, and maintenance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Communications & Mission Promotion Duties
• Serve as chief spokesperson & media contact for the diocese with media and other constituencies
• Serve as communications consultant to the bishop, department directors, priests, school administrators and others
• Create and maintain working relationships with media outlets across the diocese, region, state and nation
• Develop and produce press releases and other media materials in collaboration with the bishop, department directors, priests, school administrators and others
• Serve as primary manager of diocesan social-media programs
• Develop and coordinate diocesan website design, maintenance, and content management
• Develop and manage event & mission promotion strategies and related materials
• Serve as event and mission promotions consultant to the bishop and department directors
• Develop and manage the Diocese's style guides and collateral material designs
• Work with assistant director to maintain The Message (Word Press) and diocesan (Weebly) websites
• Maintain the digital diocesan yearbook
• Serve as bishop's liaison with Catholic radio stations in the diocese
• Serve as liaison with local inter-faith community leaders for the annual National Day of Prayer
• Serve as primary creator of holy cards for deceased priests
• Create and place, and/or assist families with, obituaries for deceased priests
• Develop annual operating budget for communications and The Message
• Serve as communications/editorial liaison to Indiana Catholic Conference and Indiana dioceses
The Message & Publications duties
• Serve as editor of the paper, working with the publisher (bishop) to set the editorial course for The Message
• Copyedit all incoming content for the paper
• Create and distribute the makeup sheet for each issue
• Develop editorial schedule for all local columnists
• Write and shoot photography for the paper as necessary
• Write columns as necessary
• Cover diocesan and community events for the paper
• Upload digital issue of the paper to online storage base each week
• Create links for digital edition and provide to circulation coordinator for distribution
• Serve as primary creator of the weekly Around the Diocese feature
• Serve as primary editor of Special Jubilarians wedding notices
• Handle payments to all local columnists and Catholic News Service
• Serve as primary contact with The Message printer
• Reconcile display ads with final newspaper pages for each issue
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Practicing Catholic in good standing
• Degree in journalism, English, marketing or communications
• At least 5 years' experience (10 years or more preferred) relevant experience
• Experience in digital media strategies and creative design a plus
• Clear, concise verbal and written communications skills
• Ability to react quickly and effectively to "breaking" or "crisis" situations
• Ability to collaborate well with bishop, directors, priests, school administrators and others
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office platform
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn Adobe Photoshop
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn Word Press and Weebly content-management system
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn Associated Press and Catholic News Service styles
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn relevant elements of the Code of Canon Law
• Willingness to learn The Message display advertising management
