Supervises: Black Catholic Ministry, Hispanic Ministry, Asian/Pacific Islander Ministry, Spiritual Direction, IPI Administrator, Office Administrator
II. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The director of Intercultural Ministries provides leadership and guidance to the ministries that serve ethnic/cultural groups present in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. A person in this role serves as an advocate for diversity and strives to develop intercultural competence in parishes, schools, and agencies of the Archdiocese. This person of faith is both a pastoral minister who possesses a vision of how a local Church can develop its potential and a professional who holds specialized credentials in ministry.
III. MAJOR RESPONSIBILTIES AND REGULAR ACTIVITIES/Essential Functions
1. Provide direction and oversight for all ministerial activities associated with the Office of Intercultural Ministries including, but not limited to, Hispanic/Latino Ministry, Black Catholic Ministry, and Asian/Pacific Islander Catholic Communities.
2. Develop and implement a vision of ministry that promotes intercultural competencies and unity reflective of the diversity of the Body of Christ.
3. Lead ministry formation and training on an Archdiocesan level by making available resources for ministerial and spiritual growth that are accessible to people of all cultural communities present in the Archdiocese.
4. Meet with various internal stakeholders (Pastors, Office of Catechesis, Catholic Charities, Office of Catholic Schools, Human Resources, etc) to strategize ways to further develop and instill intercultural competency, unity and diversity appreciation.
5. Seek out and further develop networking opportunities with various ethnicities/cultures served (or underserved) within the archdiocese.
6. Establish and lead an Intercultural Commission to facilitate listening sessions and gather feedback on needs from various stakeholders within the Archdiocese.
7. Support and participate as needed in ethnic group advisory committees or commissions.
8. Identify and help to eliminate barriers for various multi-cultural communities to achieve fulfillment and acceptance within their parishes, schools, and the Archdiocese overall.
9. Ensure various diverse communities have a voice or a seat at the table when setting objectives or developing long term goals for the Office of Intercultural Ministries and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis
10. Visit parishes to promote and facilitate inter-parish collaboration to respond to the needs of all various ethnic/multi-cultural communities and encourage intercultural participation in parish life.
11. Enhance communication to increase awareness of the programs and services provided by the Office of Intercultural Ministries. Seek feedback from pastoral leaders and laity being served to identify unmet and/or future needs and opportunities for improvement.
12. Ensure safe, effective management and use of the Intercultural Pastoral Institute and all activities held in the facility.
13. Provide guidance and promote cultural-specific events and activities that enhance ministry within cultural groups in the Archdiocese. These include:
a. The Intercultural Awards Banquet
b. Ethnic dinners
c. Liturgical celebrations such as the African Mass, Filipino Salubong, etc.
14. Oversee the ministerial staff including the Coordinators of Hispanic Ministry, Black Catholic ministry, and Spiritual Direction, as well as the administrative assistants for the office and the Intercultural Pastoral Institute.
15. Provide on-going formation for ministerial and office staff in the Intercultural Ministries office.
16. Support and collaborate with agencies that are part of the Secretariat for Pastoral Ministries and other archdiocesan agencies, e.g. Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Charities, Vocations, etc.
a. In cooperation with the Directors of Youth Ministry and Young Adult Ministry develop formation and ministry opportunities for Hispanic/Latino, Black Catholic, and Asian/Pacific Islander youth and young adults.
b. Advocate and respond to the social needs of ethnic communities through education and direct service.
17. Ensure there is an effective communication plan for Intercultural Ministries including use of website, Criterion articles, and other media as appropriate.
18. Represent the Archdiocese at local and national conferences, on various committees, and at public events as directed.
19. Solicit grants for projects in Intercultural ministry.
20. Prepare the annual budgets for the Intercultural Ministries Office, the Institute, and ethnic ministries with involvement and input from coordinators and office staff.
IV. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

• Excellent communicator who invites participation and collaboration. Ability to adapt message according to the needs and characteristics of many different audiences.
• Bilingual preferred with the ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish.
• Excellent planning, organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated skills in organizing and supervising people in formation and administration in a multi-cultural setting.
• Ability to work independently and highly self-motivated.
b. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE
• Master's degree or equivalent experience in theology, pastoral studies, or intercultural ministry is preferred.
• Previous experience in ministry at the parish or diocesan level with intercultural ministerial experience.
• Experience in supervising or leading others.
V. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
a. The employee is expected to attend evening and weekend events, as necessary. Travel may be required, as specified by the supervisor. Regular travel throughout the archdiocese is required. In some cases, the needs of the position may require extra hours beyond the normal schedule.
b. Lay ministers are vital ministers sharing the mission of the Church. They are expected to be role models and are expressly charged with leading parishioners toward Christian maturity and with teaching the Word of God. As role models, the personal conduct of every lay minister, both at Church and away from Church, must convey and be supportive of the teachings of the Catholic Church. These teachings include, but are not limited to: honoring the dignity of each human life from conception to natural death, care for God's creation, and the belief that all persons are called to respect human sexuality and its expression in the Sacrament of Marriage as a sign of God's love and fidelity to His Church. c. Determining whether a lay minister is conducting him/herself in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church is an internal Church matter and is at the sole discretion of the pastor, administrator, and/or Archbishop.
d. The Archdiocese recognizes that some lay ministers who contribute positively to the mission of the Church are not practicing Catholics. For lay ministers of other faith traditions, there remains an expectation that, regardless of their personal religious affiliations and beliefs, they will become knowledgeable of Catholic Church teachings, will be credible witnesses of the Catholic faith, and will be models of Christian values.
