The Director of Music is a full-time employee of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta and is responsible to the Pastor of St. Philip Benizi Parish (SPB) and will lead the music program for the parish, helping it to pray/worship by supporting liturgies with vibrant and inspirational music. The Music Director is a person with a heart for people whose passion is to share the Good News and their musical/administrative gifts for the building of God's kingdom. The Music Director works closely with the parish staff and parishioners to ensure that all liturgical actions foster the SPB mission.
Current Mass Schedule / Music Ministry Ensembles:
• Mass Schedule:
o Saturday 4:00pm English; 6:00pm Spanish
o Sunday 8:30am English; 10:30am English; 12:30pm Spanish; 4:00pm English
• Two choirs with a total of 22 members who rehearse weekly.
• One Spanish Choir with 15 members/instrumentalists who rehearse weekly.
• A two-person Spanish ensemble who lead the music for one Mass.
• A hand bell choir performs periodically,
• A Festival Choir performs for major liturgical celebrations (eg. Holy Week)
• There are currently no regular cantors. The current English choir members have been the same people for a number of years.
Music Ministry Facilities & Instruments:
• St. Philip Benizi Church holds 700 worshipers, with an ample tiered Music Ministry space in the front right of the sanctuary.
• The Sanctuary hosts a 9' Baldwin Concert Grand Piano and a 3 Manual Allen Digital Organ (2013).
• There are no hymnals in the Church, rather two large screens in the sanctuary that have music projected on them for parishioners to see.
• The St. Hildegard Music Room - a 1500sqft rehearsal space with ample storage.
• A 200sqft Director of Music Office.
A. Selects music for all parish liturgies based on the liturgical season and the readings, making certain that the same music is chosen in each language for all the liturgies scheduled at different times.
B. Chooses music familiar to the congregation and introduces new music with special focus on retention.
C. Prepares projected worship aids (images on screens in Sanctuary) for weekend and other liturgies.
D. Leads the music for 4 weekend (1 Saturday Vigil / 3 Sunday) English liturgies, all Holy Day liturgies, Funeral Masses, Weddings, Quinceaneras, and special liturgies.
E. Supervises the selection and performance of music for the 2 Sunday and other Spanish language Liturgies, as well as parish Bi-Lingual Liturgies.
F. Recruits, schedules, directs, and rehearses choirs and musicians, in such a way as to engage the greatest number of participants.
G. Provides, writes, or otherwise creates parts for other instruments used in liturgies.
H. Hires and schedules professional cantors and other musicians as needed.
I. Leads and/or trains leaders of the parish musical ensembles and supervises these leaders/ensembles with regular feedback and annual written evaluation.
J. Maintains all parish-owned instruments and sound equipment.
K. Prepares and supervises the annual Music budget in coordination with the parish Business Manager.
L. Introduces new music and encourages congregational participation.
M. Files and maintains music records and music licenses.
N. Cooperates with the liturgical music programs of the Archdiocese as needed.
O. Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
P. Keeps Music Office, Music Room, and Music Ministry area in the Church Sanctuary in neat and visually appealing form.
Q. Professional Development
i. Safe environment training is required and is to be maintained.
ii. Participate in at least one continuing education program each year for professional development.
iii. Maintain membership in any professional associations as appropriate and engage accordingly in regular updating in finance/management best practices.
iv. Commit appropriate time to continue developing spiritually as a Minister of the Gospel and as a disciple who lives a healthy Catholic life of faith.
R. Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Sees self as a minister of the Gospel who uses music as a means of engaging and empowering disciples of Jesus in the Church.
2. Humility and a desire to serve God's people in music ministry.
3. Passion for the Church's liturgical tradition as well as today's current practice.
4. Outstanding communication, organizational and interpersonal abilities.
5. Pleasant singing voice and able to lead congregational song when a Cantor or vocal ensemble is not available.
6. High degree of proficiency in the use of the organ and piano.
7. Working knowledge of other instruments used in liturgical music.
8. Effective Choral conducting experience.
9. Experience in parish liturgical music programs that lead and sustain congregational singing.
10. Degree in Music with special preference for Church Music, Vocal or Organ Performance, or Music Education.
11. At least 3-5 years of experience in a similar position is preferred.
12. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and in a music notation program such as Sibelius or Finale.
13. Ability to pass a background check, which may include fingerprinting, drug testing and credit history.
14. Demonstration of organ and vocal skills will be required.
15. Spanish language proficiency considered a plus.
16. Successful completion of a legal background check.
17. Practicing Catholic in good standing, knowledge of the Catholic faith, and a willingness to adhere to the policies of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church and the Archdiocese of Atlanta. The Director of Music will not publicly oppose the teachings of the Catholic faith nor publicly advocate for any position in conflict with Catholic teaching, or the specific positions of the Archdiocese of Atlanta or the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. This requirement includes any public speech, demonstration or writing including the use of social media or other digital technologies.
Regular weekend, evening & office work hours required. Along with the regular parish liturgical schedule, the Director is required to provide music for additional services during Holy Week, sacramental celebrations, weddings, quinceaneras, and funerals.
• Full-time, 12 month a year position.
• Salary commensurate with education and experience.
• No additional stipends will be tendered, but rather are included in the salary offered.
