St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hallandale Beach, Florida seeks a full-time Director of Music Ministry. Responsibilities for director include directing, scheduling, and rehearsing with cantors and adult choir; oversight of the musical selections for weekend and Holy Day Masses; coordinating music for weddings and funerals and assisting at special events. The candidate must be proficient in piano and organ, able to lead and train musical groups, and serve as cantor when needed. The Director of Music Ministry performs all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami.
Essential Duties and Functions:
• Responsible for all liturgical music including choral direction as accompanist, cantor and/or director.
• Develops and trains choral and instrumental assembles, cantors and accompanies, to lead and support the liturgical music required for all worship, religious education, social ministry, and evangelization.
• Develops prayerful, singing assembly through celebration, preparation and evaluation, education, and personal ministry.
• Participates in and plan sacramental celebrations and other liturgies with the parish staff, leaders, and volunteers, including for religious education, RCIA and youth ministry.
• Coordinates and schedules musicians, cantors, accompanists, for all liturgies including Advent and Christmas, Holy Week, penance, and other liturgical services as needed, including weddings and funerals as requested.
• Uses appropriate ministerial, pastoral, and liturgical judgment for music selection.
• Conducts at least twice a week rehearsal, one in English and one in Spanish, for about one and a half hours each.
• Provides appropriate training for cantors, organists, and members of musical ensembles.
• Performs related clerical activity such as maintaining choir schedules, creating worship aids and bulletin notices, and tending to phone calls and ministry-related correspondence, reporting song usage on Onelicense.
• Builds and maintains a liturgical choral library.
• Coordinates maintenance and care of music equipment and supplies as well as oversee organ and piano tuning and repair and the availability of mics, cables, and music stands.
• Seeks self-improvement and growth in music and liturgy through means such as attending NPM or other annual music related retreats/conferences and instruction.
• Actively recruits, trains, and retains singers and musicians.
• Prepares for great feasts and seasons of the Church, Sundays of Ordinary Time, sacraments, and celebrations with children.
• Scheduling of music ministers with timely distribution of all schedules and music so that musicians have adequate rehearsal time.
• Overall coordination of the various music ministries.
• Long and short-range planning of music.
Qualifications:
• Education: bachelor's degree in Music required, master's preferred.
• Knowledge of the Roman Catholic liturgy and ability to integrate the liturgy into the music.
• Ability to create music scores and arrangements for choir and instrumentalists as needed.
• Mastery of keyboard technique used in liturgical celebration and voice/choral performance experience.
• Knowledge of acoustics, especially pertaining to the parish worship space.
• Working knowledge of Roman Catholic Liturgy.
• Minimum three (3) years of experience directing with various styles of Catholic repertoire.
• Good time management skills, including ability to manage several projects at the same time.
• Excellent inter-personal skills, including ability to maintain focus on and professionalism with people in challenging situations.
• Proficiency in the use of Music applications such as Sibelius, Finale, or other music notation software.
• Practice support of and with the mission and tenets of the Roman Catholic Church.
• Professional demeanor in collaboration with employees and volunteers.
