Purpose and Scope
To support the rapidly growing Diocese of Phoenix in its mission to Encounter the Living Christ, this position will oversee the liturgical music at diocesan liturgies. As a joyful and competent team-player, the Director of Diocesan Liturgical Music for the Diocese of Phoenix will get to build up the liturgical life of the diocese under the supervision of the Director of the Office of Worship and Liturgy and in collaboration with the newly formed Diocesan Liturgical Commission lead by Bishop John P. Dolan.
The Second Vatican Council emphasized that the Liturgy is the source and summit of the Christian life and "sacred music is to be considered the more holy in proportion as it is more closely connected with the liturgical action, whether it adds delight to prayer, fosters unity of minds, or confers greater solemnity upon the sacred rites." (Sancrosanctum Concilium 112.3) With this vision of the Church, this newly established position of Director of Diocesan Liturgical Music at the Diocese of Phoenix will work toward the following practical, short-term goals:
• Develop and implement a musical repertoire that creatively blends the wide breadth of Sacred Music in the Church's tradition, from ancient to contemporary.
• Recruit and direct volunteer singers, providing the vocal training necessary for blending the choral sound.
• Collaborate with local Catholic schools to include youth choirs in Cathedral and Diocesan liturgies.
• Foster congregational singing at the Cathedral.
Essential Job Functions

• Oversee and organize the entire sacred music program of Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral and of the Diocese, which includes, but is not limited to: Sunday Masses at the Cathedral, weekly Televised Masses, Diocesan-wide Masses (Ordinations, Chrism Mass, Specialty Groups, etc.), Rites where the Bishop presides (e.g. Dedication of an Altar, Vespers, etc.), Masses for the Diocesan Pastoral Center staff.
• Direct and conduct the Cathedral Choir (weekly), as well as Diocesan choir and Diocesan orchestra (event-based). Responsibilities include running weekly rehearsals for Cathedral Choir and less frequent rehearsal for diocesan choirs as needed.
• Oversee the administration of paid singers and musicians in collaboration with the staff of the Cathedral and the Diocesan Office of Worship and Liturgy.
• Collaborate with Cathedral Staff to oversee music for weekly Cathedral Mass in Spanish.
• Oversee the maintenance of instruments belonging to the Cathedral.
• Maintain and manage the Diocesan and Cathedral Liturgical Music budget.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
• Proficiency in choral conducting, voice instruction and development.
• Ability to conduct orchestras and smaller instrumental ensembles.
• Knowledge and appreciation of the Catholic Church's liturgical tradition and practice
• Ability to lead and sustain a program of vibrant singing which encourages congregational participation.
• Knowledge of available repertoire of liturgical music, including traditional hymns, Gregorian chant, polyphony and contemporary praise and worship.
• Effective supervisory, communication and interpersonal skills.
Additional Job Functions
• Performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the Director of Office of Worship and Liturgy and the Bishop.
Minimum Qualifications
• Active practicing Roman Catholic who is in full communion with the Church.
• Valid AZ driver's license and the ability to travel to other locations within the Diocese for work-related duties.
• Master's degree in music strongly preferred, plus 5 years relevant experience.
Work Environment
• This job operates in a professional office environment.
• This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
Physical Demands
• This is largely a sedentary role; however, some local travel to parishes is required.
